How do the digital smart electric meters work?

I've been wondering for awhile how do the new smart meters actually remember the kilowatt hours you used if the power goes out?

Like wouldn't it go to zero being no power is going through it or does it remember via a microchip or something?|||I'm not an expert on this, but I asked the same question of a power company employee, and my recollection is that he said there is a memory chip inside the unit which does not lose its stored contents when power goes off. So everything is still there when the power comes back on.|||Hi

This meter is a great idea. Keep track of your PD (Power Demand) lower is better. Additionally, There is a way for the meter to send your Gas and water usage via the power meter. Less manual labor...lower costs. Hopefully the companies will pass along the savings.

S1lent|||I would be willing to bet that any information coming from your smart meter can not be relied upon since they all are hackable.

The forum below shows that hackers already have everything they need to make these meters useless.
