Can you use an andoid or smart phone with a basic phone plan?

I have a basic plan with t-mobile. I only make phone calls and text messages. I am thinking of getting a smart phone now and would like to do a little more with it in the future but for now I want to keep my basic phone plan until I am ready. Will a smart phone work with my basic plan. The phone I am looking at is a T-Mobile comet.|||if you buy the phone for full price or from another source like eBay, you can avoid the data plan. If you buy it with an upgrade, the data plan is required.|||no.... basic voice and text and no data plans are for feature phones only!

Per Terms of Service and Conditions on Tmo, ATT, Verizon, Altell, and Sprint, a smartphone must have a $30 smartphone data plan.... no data plan = no smartphone sale|||Only if you buy one that's unlocked. If you want one from them with a 2 year contract than you are required to get the plan.|||They'll quickly detect that you're using a smartphone and drag you into a data plan.|||You need a data plan
