Why are Holland the only smart nation to legalize and sell Marijuana?

They are smart people. Marijuana should be legal everywhere to those above age. It would give people an alternative to exploding their liver and kidneys from alcohol all the time :) And it would be great for tax, crime would lower and physical violence in crime and relationships (domestic abuse etc)|||Holland is the not the only nation that has legalized marijuana. Many nations are now reviewing they're ineffective and outdated marijuana policy's put in place by pressure of foreign governments before marijuana use was widespread.(Guess who did the most pressuring for other countries to ban it? The USA) Conventions such as the Single convention(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Conv鈥?/a> led most nations to ban marijuana before it was fully studied and a common drug. Since the single convention many nations have broken away from what they agreed to and started reducing the penalties for marijuana. Almost all modern nations have decriminalized marijuana and deal with it by means of a civil citation or fine. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of鈥?/a>

Marijuana was made illegal in the united states during the Mexican revolution. In the early 1900s, the western states developed significant tensions regarding the influx of Mexican-Americans. Refugees from the revolution in Mexico in 1910 spilled over the border and later in that decade, bad feelings developed between the small farmer and the large farms that used cheaper Mexican labor. Then, the depression came and increased tensions, as jobs and welfare resources became scarce.

One of the "differences" seized upon during this time was the fact that many Mexicans smoked marijuana and had brought the plant with them. However, the first state law outlawing marijuana did so not because of Mexicans using the drug. Oddly enough, it was because of Mormons using it. Mormons who traveled to Mexico in 1910 came back to Salt Lake City with marijuana. The church was not pleased and ruled against use of the drug. Since the state of Utah automatically enshrined church doctrine into law, the first state marijuana prohibition was established in 1915. (Today, Senator Orrin Hatch serves as the prohibition arm of this heavily church-influenced state.) Other states quickly followed suit with marijuana prohibition laws, including Wyoming (1915), Texas (1919), Iowa (1923), Nevada (1923), Oregon (1923), Washington (1923), Arkansas (1923), and Nebraska (1927). These laws tended to be specifically targeted against the Mexican-American population. Keep in mind during this time period the leaders and representatives of this country were ALL Caucasian and didn't hide the fact that they were severely racist. Any legislation targeting a minority group had a high chance to pass. If you go to the library of congress and read some of the things that were said you would be in disbelief, one such quote was "All Mexicans are crazy and this stuff is what makes them crazy" (referring to marijuana). Drug law after drug law past and the U.S. pressured many foreign countries into prohibiting the drug also as previously stated. President Nixon commissioned a group called the schafer commission to extensively study the illegality of the substance and to report their findings. It is rumored based on the statement of a secret service member inside the oval office at the time(although not verified) that President Nixon read the report and threw it away after reading the first page of the report that recommended legalizing marijuana. A copy of the report can be found online.

On a better note many states/countries are now realizing the marijuana laws are ineffective and decriminalizing it. Massachusetts is expected to join a dozen other states with decriminalization via voter referendum on November fourth. And many modern countries have started the decriminalization process including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and Portugal.|||Who cares go move to Holland if you want legal weed|||Yes and all the people who are totally over getting loaded can distribute it and take all their jobs and get filthy rich! f*ck yeah!

i been there.. its fun, but i think it's still a grey zone and not legal. for instance, you can only carry up to a certain amount on you. it was 5g till a while ago, I don't know how the laws have changed.|||It's true man...I mean it would probably get a little more expensive then your average 10 a gram, but think about how many new jobs would be created! Someone to cultivate the weed, someone to pick the buds...hell maybe even someone to individually roll joints and put em in cigarette like packs...Pot could deffinatley be America's Number one Export!|||didn't this country learn anything from when they made alcohol illegal, it doesn't work

all there doing by making marijuana illegal is making people want it more and do anything to get it, plus the drug dealers make a **** load of money.

alcohol is terrible for you and they eventually made it legal, give it time things will change.

maybe for your child's 18th[or 21st] birthday you'll be buying them a joint instead of a nasty beer
